The fire was reported at approximately 5:15 a.m. on May 1, 2026, at a residence on 323 Aggie Avenue in Goodwell. Firefighters from Goodwell, Guymon, and Texhoma responded to reports of heavy smoke and flames coming from the home. Upon arrival, crews encountered intense fire conditions throughout the structure.

Goodwell firefighters entered through a bedroom window and were able to rescue the sole occupant from inside the burning residence. Once removed from the home, Guymon paramedics immediately began life-saving efforts before transporting Coen to Memorial Hospital of Texas County in Guymon, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Steven Coen was a dedicated member of the Guymon Fire Department EMS Division and an active EMT who spent the past 10 years serving his community with commitment, compassion, and professionalism. Fire Chief Grant Wadley described his loss as deeply felt, saying, “Steven is a member of the Guymon Fire Department and an active EMT in our EMS Division. This is a huge loss for our department, community, and area.”

Coen also served as an EMT in Hooker, Oklahoma, where he assisted with covering calls so fellow responders could have time off when needed. He was scheduled to work EMS detail at this weekend’s Pioneer Days Rodeo as a first responder.

His passing has left colleagues, friends, and the Goodwell community in deep mourning, remembering him as selfless, dependable, and always ready to serve.

Multiple agencies, including the Oklahoma State Fire Marshal’s Office, Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s Office, Goodwell Police Department, and Goodwell Fire Department, are investigating the cause of the fire.

Goodwell now grieves the loss of a man who dedicated his life to saving others.

Rest in peace, Steven Coen
