Gustavo Angel Santiago-Espinoza, 26, was fatally shot early Monday morning in a shopping plaza along White Horse Road, in a killing that has left investigators searching for answers and a grieving community in shock.

Authorities say emergency calls reporting gunfire came in at approximately 1:48 a.m. Deputies with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office and emergency medical personnel arrived within minutes, finding Santiago-Espinoza unresponsive in the parking lot. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:58 a.m.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office later confirmed that Santiago-Espinoza died from at least one gunshot wound and ruled the manner of death a homicide. Officials have not released details regarding a suspect or motive, and the case remains under active investigation.

Preliminary witness accounts suggest the shooting may have followed a verbal dispute. One individual reported hearing raised voices moments before gunfire, while another described seeing a person flee the scene in a dark-colored sedan. Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and traffic cameras in an effort to identify those involved.

Santiago-Espinoza, originally from Guerrero, Mexico, had been living in the Greenville area for several years, working in construction as a drywall finisher. Friends and colleagues described him as quiet, hardworking, and devoted to supporting his family abroad. He was known to regularly send money home to his mother and maintain close ties with his siblings.

Community members gathered Monday evening for a candlelight vigil near the site of the shooting, remembering Santiago-Espinoza as a man striving for a better future.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
