According to authorities, the shooting occurred around 5:52 p.m. on April 26 along the 1800 block of Morris Avenue, outside the Greyhound terminal. Officers responding to reports of gunfire found Hill suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso. He was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead despite emergency medical intervention.

Preliminary findings from the Birmingham Police Department indicate that Hill had been involved in a verbal dispute with another individual that escalated into a physical confrontation. A security guard on duty intervened. At some point during the encounter, the guard discharged his weapon, striking Hill. The exact sequence of events remains unclear, including whether the guard faced an imminent threat that justified the use of deadly force under Alabama law.

The security guard, described as a licensed armed officer in his early 30s, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. He has not been charged as of Monday, pending further review.

Hill, a U.S. Army veteran and father, had been working to rebuild his life and was traveling through Birmingham en route to visit his daughter. Family members remember him as a man striving for stability and reconnection.

Authorities continue to review surveillance footage and witness accounts. The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office will determine whether charges are warranted.
