A 29-year-old woman from Herkimer County died Friday night after her vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree in Otsego County, according to New York State Police.
Authorities identified the victim as Ashley M. Faubert, a resident of Ilion. Police said Faubert was traveling south along Route 22 when the crash occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m., just south of Butternut Road in the town of Richfield.
According to a news release issued Saturday, Faubert’s vehicle veered off the road for reasons that remain under investigation before colliding with a tree. Authorities have not yet determined what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway, and no additional vehicles were involved in the incident. Faubert was the sole occupant at the time of the crash.
Neighbors living near the scene reported hearing the impact and quickly rushed to assist. One nearby resident, identified as an emergency medical technician, immediately began administering CPR in an effort to save Faubert’s life. The quick response highlights the critical role bystanders can play in emergencies, particularly in rural areas where first responders may take longer to arrive.
Emergency personnel from Otsego County EMS soon reached the scene and continued life-saving measures. Faubert was transported by ambulance to Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown. Despite those efforts, she was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Troopers from the Richfield Springs barracks responded to the crash site, securing the area and beginning an initial investigation. Authorities have not indicated whether weather, road conditions, speed, or mechanical issues may have been contributing factors. Toxicology results, which are standard in fatal crashes, have not yet been released.
The stretch of Route 22 where the crash occurred is known for its rural character, with limited lighting and winding sections that can present challenges for drivers, particularly at night. Officials have not confirmed whether these conditions played a role in the incident.
State police say the investigation remains ongoing as they work to determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the crash. They are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant information to come forward.
Faubert’s death marks another tragic reminder of the risks associated with roadway travel, especially during nighttime hours. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of safe driving practices, including maintaining proper speed, staying alert, and avoiding distractions.
