Custody Dispute Ends in Murder-Suicide Involving Woman and Child

On March 28, 2026, just before 4:30 p.m., officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 6100 block of East Belknap Street at a Birdville ISD stadium parking lot in Haltom City, Texas. Upon arrival, they found three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds—one outside a vehicle and two inside. One victim was transported to a hospital, where she later died.
The victims were identified as 33-year-old Raissa Thatukila and her 6-year-old daughter, Nathy Mbuyi.
The shooter was identified as 30-year-old John Mbuyi, the child’s father.
According to investigators, Mbuyi arranged to meet the victims under the pretense of giving them money amid an ongoing custody dispute. Authorities say he arrived at the location, engaged in an argument with Thatukila, then opened fire into the vehicle before turning the gun on himself.
On March 30, 2026, officials confirmed the shooting was planned in advance. Investigators stated that Mbuyi had ongoing grievances toward Thatukila and was experiencing personal distress in the period leading up to the incident.
Birdville ISD confirmed the child was a kindergarten student at Cheney Hills Elementary School. District officials stated counselors were made available and confirmed the incident was not connected to school activities.
