SYDNEY, Australia — A mass shooting took place at Bondi Beach, one of Sydney’s most popular beachfront areas, during a Hanukkah celebration in the late afternoon of December 14, 2025.
According to authorities, two armed men opened fire on crowds gathered near Campbell Parade and Archer Park for a “Chanukah by the Sea” event attended by hundreds of people. The attack has been declared a terrorist incident by New South Wales Police.
Officials say that at least 15 people were killed and dozens more were wounded in the shooting, making it one of the deadliest mass attacks in modern Australian history.
Police engaged the gunmen; one was killed at the scene, and the second was taken into custody after being wounded and remains hospitalized under guard.
Emergency responders and bystanders helped move injured people to safety, and many victims were transported to area hospitals for treatment.
Australian leaders described the incident as a targeted attack on members of the Jewish community during a holiday celebration, and a national day of mourning was later observed.
