Twins Found Dead With Broken Bones — Mother Gets 8 Years, Father Gets 40
On October 4, 2023, at about 11:17 a.m., officers responded to the 2100 block of Linden Creek Lane in Houston, Texas after receiving a call about infants not breathing. Upon arrival, they found two 1-month-old twins unresponsive in their home. Despite CPR instructions given by dispatch, both infants were pronounced dead at the scene.
The victims were identified as 6-week-old Massail Vega and Mirena Vega.
At the time, authorities reported no visible signs of trauma. However, an autopsy later determined both infants died from multiple injuries caused by blunt-force trauma, including broken bones and head injuries. Investigators also found the twins were severely malnourished and dehydrated, and some of their injuries were days or even weeks old.
According to investigators, the children’s father, Fernando Vega, told police he last saw the twins alive about 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. and claimed he left them in his grandmother’s care. He later returned home after taking the children’s mother, Angelina Belinda Calderon, to work and found the infants unresponsive.
Authorities also determined the twins had not received medical check-ups after being released from the hospital, despite reportedly being sick.
On April 19, 2024, both Vega and Calderon, who were 21 at the time, were arrested and charged with two counts each of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury.
On January 14, 2026, Vega was sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to injury to a child causing serious bodily injury. Court records show he waived his right to a jury trial and received credit for 631 days already served.
On April 29, 2026, Calderon’s sentencing hearing began.
On April 30, 2026, Calderon was sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of injury to a child in connection with the deaths.
Court records also show Calderon previously violated bond conditions by leaving her residence without permission while under GPS monitoring and house arrest in December 2025.
