Law enforcement agencies in Missouri are investigating a series of connected incidents that began early this morning in Johnson County, including a shooting involving a juvenile victim and a subsequent officer-involved shooting that left a 19-year-old suspect dead.
According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at approximately 2:00 a.m. to the area near Highway 131 and U.S. Highway 50 after reports of a 17-year-old juvenile with a gunshot wound inside a vehicle. While responding, authorities received additional information that a suspect had fled the scene on foot.
In response, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office to establish a perimeter and assist in locating the suspect. The Odessa Police Department also joined the search effort.
At approximately 3:53 a.m., deputies and officers located two males walking near U.S. Highway 50 and NW 1601 Road. One individual was identified as matching the description of the suspect connected to the earlier shooting. Authorities say that upon contact, the suspect fled on foot, prompting a pursuit by a Lafayette County deputy and an Odessa police officer.
During the pursuit, at approximately 3:54 a.m., a Lafayette County deputy discharged his firearm, striking the 19-year-old suspect. The individual was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Officials have confirmed that two separate investigations are now underway. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the initial shooting involving the 17-year-old victim found in the vehicle. Meanwhile, the Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control (DDCC) has been requested to independently investigate the officer-involved shooting, in accordance with standard protocol.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the condition of the juvenile victim or the events leading up to the initial shooting. Investigators say both cases remain active, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
