According to the Virginia State Police, troopers were dispatched at approximately 4:10 p.m. on April 28 to Little Calf Pasture Highway, about 2.3 miles south of Old Parkersburg Turnpike, after reports of a crash involving a single vehicle.

When emergency responders arrived, they discovered Melton had suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say Melton was driving a Chevy 3500 when, for reasons still under review, he crossed over a double solid centerline, veered off the left side of the roadway, and struck a tree with significant force. The impact proved fatal.

Authorities also confirmed that Melton was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

No other vehicles were involved.
