A quiet stretch of roadway in Augusta County has become the site of heartbreak and loss as the community mourns the death of Larry W. Melton, 67, of Millboro, who was killed in a devastating single-vehicle crash on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Virginia State Police, troopers were dispatched at approximately 4:10 p.m. on April 28 to Little Calf Pasture Highway, about 2.3 miles south of Old Parkersburg Turnpike, after reports of a crash involving a single vehicle.
When emergency responders arrived, they discovered Melton had suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say Melton was driving a Chevy 3500 when, for reasons still under review, he crossed over a double solid centerline, veered off the left side of the roadway, and struck a tree with significant force. The impact proved fatal.
Authorities also confirmed that Melton was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
No other vehicles were involved.
