With tremendous sadness, the Town of Ocean City, Maryland is mourning the passing of Beach Patrol Lieutenant Edward (Ward) Kovacs, a dedicated public servant whose lifelong commitment to protecting others left a lasting mark on the community he faithfully served.
Ward Kovacs began his career with the Ocean City Beach Patrol in the early 1980s, dedicating more than four decades of his life to safeguarding the beaches, residents, and millions of visitors who come to Ocean City each year. For generations, he was a steady and familiar presence along the shoreline—known for his professionalism, calm leadership, and unwavering devotion to public safety.
Throughout his long and distinguished service, Ward impacted countless lives. He was widely respected not only for his experience and skill as a lifeguard but also for his compassion, humility, and deep sense of duty. He carried out his work with quiet strength, always focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of others above all else.
Ward was also a mentor to many young lifeguards who served under his guidance.
