With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, we gather to honor the life of Frederick Holmes, whose final moments unfolded in a tragic drowning incident at Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis.
According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), emergency responders were called to the reservoir shortly before noon after reports that a swimmer had gone under the water and did not resurface.
Witnesses reported that Frederick had stepped forward to help retrieve a fishing boat that had drifted away. In an act of selflessness, he entered the water with the intention of assisting others. Moments later, he began to struggle to stay afloat and was seen going under.
Rescue crews responded immediately, and after approximately 30 minutes, dive teams with the Indianapolis Fire Department Dive Team located him beneath the surface. He was brought to shore and transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital, where he was reported in critical condition.
Despite all efforts by medical staff, Frederick Holmes passed away, leaving his family, friends, and community in deep shock and sorrow.
Today, we pause not only to mourn his passing, but to honor his life and his final act of courage. Frederick is being remembered as someone who did not hesitate to help others, even in danger. His actions reflect a life defined by compassion, selflessness, and quiet bravery.
His wife and family shared that he did not have life insurance, and they are now facing the painful reality of funeral arrangements while grieving an unimaginable loss. In response, support from the community has begun to grow as many come forward to offer help and comfort.
Frederick Holmes leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured in years, but in character. He will be remembered for his willingness to step forward when others were in need, and for the humanity he showed in his final moments.
As loved ones mourn, they also honor his memory—holding onto the love, kindness, and courage he carried throughout his life.
May Frederick Holmes rest in peace, and may his memory continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
