Three people are dead following a violent crash and shooting early Sunday morning on the city’s west side, according to the Detroit Police Department. A suspect is in custody as investigators continue to piece together what led to the deadly incident.
Police said officers were called to the 21700 block of McNichols Road at approximately 3 a.m. after reports of a crash involving two vehicles. A preliminary investigation indicates the incident began as a traffic collision but quickly escalated into a fatal confrontation.
Authorities said that following the crash, an altercation broke out between the occupants of the vehicles. During that confrontation, a shooting occurred.
All three victims were inside the same vehicle at the time and were struck by gunfire. Police confirmed that the victims were pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased have been identified as 24-year-old Jasmine Ann’Mariee; her 19-year-old brother; and another 24-year-old man.
Detroit police stated that the shooting appears to have stemmed directly from the dispute that followed the crash, though the exact circumstances remain under investigation.
“Our condolences go out to all the families impacted by this tragic incident,” the department said in a statement.
The suspect was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Police have not released the suspect’s identity or additional details regarding possible charges at this time.
Investigators remain on scene and are continuing to gather evidence, review witness accounts, and determine the full sequence of events leading up to the shooting.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, and further information will be released as it becomes available.
