Damon Thompson Shooting News: 22-Year-Old Man Killed, Another Injured in Suspected Robbery Shooting in Downtown Columbus

Authorities have identified a 22-year-old man who was killed in a shooting Saturday evening in downtown Columbus, an incident police believe may have stemmed from a robbery.

According to the Columbus Division of Police, officers were called at approximately 6:50 p.m. to the 300 block of South Grant Avenue, near the intersection of East Mound and South Fifth streets, for reports of a shooting.

When officers arrived at the scene, they located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound, later identified as Damon Thompson, 22. Emergency medical personnel transported Thompson to Grant Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Police said a second victim was also discovered nearby and was taken to Grant Medical Center for treatment. In an update released Sunday morning, officials stated that the second victim is expected to survive their injuries.

Investigators at the scene indicated the shooting may have been connected to a suspected robbery attempt, though the full circumstances remain under active investigation.

A possible suspect was reportedly detained by responding officers shortly after the incident and has been interviewed by detectives as part of the ongoing case.

No formal charges have been announced at this time.
