South Lake Tahoe firefighter-paramedic Neil Schnaible is in critical condition after suffering a sudden heart attack while on duty, followed by serious injuries sustained in a fall during the emergency response.
Officials say Schnaible collapsed while actively working, prompting an immediate response from fellow firefighters who began CPR at the scene. Their rapid efforts restored his pulse, but his condition remained critical.
During the collapse, Schnaible struck the pavement, suffering severe head trauma that led to multiple brain bleeds, compounding the medical emergency. He was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, where he remains under intensive care.
Colleagues describe Schnaible as a steady, dependable, and deeply respected member of the department, known for his commitment to serving others without hesitation. His sudden medical crisis has left the firehouse shaken, as crews now find themselves supporting one of their own.
At the time of the incident, Schnaible’s wife and daughter were reportedly in Greece, prompting a coordinated effort to bring them back to his side. In response, the Lake Valley Firefighters Union helped organize support, launching a GoFundMe campaign to assist with urgent travel and related expenses. Community members quickly rallied, raising nearly $70,000 in support.
As doctors continue to monitor his condition, family, friends, and colleagues remain focused on hope and recovery. Across the fire service community, Schnaible is being lifted up as a dedicated first responder whose life has been defined by service—and who now has an entire community standing behind him in his fight.
