According to the Etowah County Assistant Coroner Dantez Robinson, Corey Perez Green was pronounced deceased after suffering fatal injuries during a fall in the area of the Noccalula Falls campground. Authorities stated that the incident occurred during a police pursuit involving the Gadsden Police Department’s street crimes and narcotics unit, which had been conducting an investigation that led to a vehicle chase.
Officials reported that the pursuit continued until the vehicle reached the campground entrance at Noccalula Falls, where the driver allegedly drove around a gate in an attempt to get inside and avoid police. Officers said those involved were doing everything possible to evade capture before the pursuit came to an end at the campground.
After the vehicle stopped, authorities said two individuals exited the vehicle. The driver was taken into custody following what police described as a struggle or fight with officers. Corey, however, ran from the scene on foot.
Police reported that Corey ran approximately 20 yards before attempting to escape by jumping over a fence. In that desperate moment, authorities say he fell approximately 60 feet into a gorge, suffering catastrophic injuries.
Officials explained that once the fall happened, the situation changed instantly from law enforcement pursuit to a life-saving emergency. Officers rushed to respond, calling for additional emergency assistance and attempting to reach Corey at the bottom of the gorge. Police stated that their units went down to provide aid, doing what they could to preserve life until the scene was turned over to the Gadsden Fire Department.
Emergency crews performed life-saving measures, but Corey was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Gadsden Fire officials. The fall and resulting injuries were fatal, and the tragic outcome was confirmed on-site.
