With deep sorrow, the Burkeville community mourns the tragic passing of Alex Lamont Mahan, 48, of Burkeville, Virginia, whose life was lost in a fatal single-vehicle crash in Nottoway County.
According to the Virginia State Police, the crash occurred on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at approximately 5:53 p.m. along Lewiston Plank Road, about half a mile south of Lone Pine Road.
Investigators say Mahan was driving a 1997 Nissan Pathfinder northbound when the vehicle suddenly left the roadway under circumstances still being examined. Preliminary findings indicate the driver lost control of the SUV, and in an attempt to correct it, the vehicle was overcorrected, causing it to run off the roadway before striking a tree with significant force.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene and provided immediate medical aid. Mahan was then transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased due to the severity of his injuries.
Authorities have confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the crash. The Virginia State Police continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the loss of control, and no further details have been released at this time.
For Burkeville, the news has brought a deep sense of grief and reflection. A familiar road, a routine drive, and a matter of seconds turned into an irreversible tragedy. Loved ones are now left to process a sudden and painful loss, remembering a life that ended far too soon.
Alex Lamont Mahan is being mourned not only as a crash victim, but as a member of a close-knit community now left to carry his memory forward.
