Graycen Vargo, a long-distance runner for the Texas A&M University–Texarkana track and field team, has died after collapsing during a competition in New Orleans, Louisiana, according to the university.

Vargo, a junior from Dallas, Texas, suffered a medical emergency on Friday evening while competing in the Red River Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships, hosted by Xavier University.

Officials said he collapsed during the event and received immediate medical attention on-site before being transported to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts to save his life, he was later pronounced deceased.

The university confirmed that Vargo was a student-athlete in his first year with the Eagles after transferring from Jacksonville College. He was studying computer science and competed in both cross country and track and field.

University leaders and athletics staff described him as a dedicated student and respected teammate who made a strong impression in a short time with the program. He had recently been recognized with the Eagle Excellence Award for Cross Country during an athletic ceremony at the school.

In a statement, university officials expressed deep sorrow over the loss, extending condolences to Vargo’s family, friends, teammates, and coaches. The athletics department also shared that his passing has deeply impacted the entire campus community.

His cause of death has not been released.

Following the incident, Texas A&M University–Texarkana announced that counseling and support services will be available to students and staff coping with the sudden loss.

Graycen Vargo’s death has left teammates and loved ones in shock, as they remember a young athlete with determination, promise, and a strong work ethic both on and off the field.
