Authorities say the collapse happened in the 300 block of Black Avenue, where the family had recently purchased a home that was undergoing renovation. The structure had previously been damaged by fire in January and was later condemned by the City of Bessemer.

According to Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates, Ross and an adult family member were working inside the home when it suddenly collapsed at approximately 2:51 p.m.

Emergency responders arrived on scene, but Ross was pronounced dead at 3:25 p.m.

The circumstances surrounding the collapse remain under investigation by the Bessemer Police Department.
