A tragic crash involving a van and a freight train claimed the lives of five people Friday afternoon in northern Stone County. The Mississippi Highway Patrol and local authorities are actively investigating the incident.

According to Sheriff Todd Stewart, the crash occurred around 1 p.m. on Pump Branch Road near Highway 49. The westbound van collided with a northbound freight train, causing the vehicle to be pushed approximately 500 yards down the tracks.
Stone County Coroner Wayne Flurry has identified the victims as:
Ryan C. Peterson, 26, a corrections officer with the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office
Demarcus Perkins, 23
Kristina Carver, 45
Emley Chamblee, 22, Carver’s daughter
Sarabeth Chamblee, 20, Carver’s daughter
A sixth occupant, a 23-year-old female, was transported via medical helicopter to a hospital in New Orleans. Her current condition has not been released.
Authorities say all six occupants were in the van when the collision occurred. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the severity of the impact left five deceased at the scene. Investigators are reviewing the cause of the crash, including whether visibility, train signals, or other factors played a role.
The Stone County Sheriff’s Office, Mississippi Highway Patrol, and local emergency teams assisted at the scene. Investigators are working to gather statements from witnesses and collect evidence to determine the circumstances that led to this devastating accident.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of Ryan Peterson, Demarcus Perkins, Kristina Carver, Emley Chamblee, and Sarabeth Chamblee.
