On Wednesday, April 8, 2026, a heartbreaking incident in Toombs County resulted in the death of 2-year-old Zakai Johnson after a vehicle accident outside a home on Cadillac Drive.
According to the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 5:55 p.m., Toombs 911 Dispatch received a call from Memorial Health Meadows Hospital reporting that the child had been brought in and was later pronounced deceased due to severe injuries.
Authorities said the child was struck by a silver GMC Yukon driven by Edward Wright while in the yard. The child’s mother, Shanora Johnson, 21, immediately transported Zakai to the hospital in an attempt to save his life, but despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead.
The Vidalia Police Department initially responded to the hospital before determining the incident occurred outside city limits at 2704 Cadillac Drive, after which the case was turned over to the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to both the hospital and the scene. Due to the fatal nature of the incident, the Georgia State Patrol and its Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) were called in to assist with the investigation.
Officials say preliminary findings suggest the incident may have been accidental, though the investigation remains active and ongoing as authorities work to determine the full circumstances.
Law enforcement agencies involved have expressed their gratitude to assisting units as they continue their work.
The community is now left mourning the devastating loss of a young child whose life ended far too soon, leaving behind deep sorrow for family and loved ones.
