The Duquesne University community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Shayna Maya Bennett, who passed away on March 26, 2026. A dedicated law student with a bright future ahead, Shayna’s passing has left a profound void among her family, friends, classmates, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Shayna was currently attending Duquesne Law School, where she was pursuing her dream of becoming an attorney. Her passion for the law was deeply rooted in her desire to advocate for those who could not speak for themselves—especially children.
She aspired to use her legal education to give a voice to the voiceless and to ensure that no child was left behind. Her commitment to justice and compassion made her not only a promising student but also an inspiring individual.
Before enrolling at Duquesne, Shayna graduated Cum Laude in May 2025 from Hofstra University. During her time there, she demonstrated academic excellence and an unwavering dedication to her goals.
Her journey from undergraduate studies to law school reflected both her intelligence and her determination to make a meaningful difference in the world.
Those who knew Shayna remember her for far more than her academic achievements. From a young age, she possessed an infectious laugh, a radiant smile, and a caring heart that touched everyone around her.
She had a natural ability to uplift others, bringing warmth and positivity into every space she entered. Her kindness and empathy were evident in her daily interactions, leaving lasting impressions on friends, peers, and mentors alike.
Family was at the center of Shayna’s life. She shared a deep and loving bond with her parents, Nate and Jamie Bennett, and her sisters, Bailey and Eliana Bennett, who were not only her siblings but also her closest friends and role models.
Their unwavering support for one another created a strong foundation that Shayna cherished deeply. She also found immense joy in spending time with her extended family, including her aunts, uncles, and cousins, creating cherished memories that will live on in their hearts.
Shayna’s strong connection to her Jewish faith played a significant role in shaping her values and guiding her life’s path. She was an active and proud member of several organizations that reflected both her faith and her professional aspirations, including BBYO, the Jewish Law Association at Duquesne University, the Women’s Law Association, and Hillel at Hofstra University. Through these affiliations, she built meaningful relationships and contributed to communities that aligned with her beliefs and passions.
She is survived by her loving parents, her sisters, her Aunt Haliel Selig and Uncle Steven Selig, and her cousins Yishai, Jonah, and Sivia. Shayna is also survived by her uncles David (Mindy) Bennett and Steven (Terri) Bennett. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, the late Don and Judie Selig, the late Tilden Bennett, and the late Judy Spahr.
