Upon arrival, firefighters found a one-story home fully engulfed. Due to extreme fire conditions, including a partial roof collapse, crews initially adopted a defensive strategy while working to contain the flames. The fire was brought under control in approximately 40 minutes. Once it was safe to enter, crews discovered four deceased individuals inside the home.

The Will County Coroner’s Office identified Walter Palmer, 71, of Crete, as one of the victims. The other three were children, all also from Crete. Relatives later confirmed that the children were Palmer’s granddaughters, whom he had been caring for following the death of their mother.

Two victims were found in a front bedroom, while Palmer and a teenager were located in a back bedroom, according to the Crete Fire Chief.

Neighbors described Palmer as a devoted grandfather and a caring, community-minded neighbor. “He was very invested in his grandchildren… He’d help shovel the driveway in the snow and watch his granddaughters play. It is a tragic loss for our neighborhood in general,” said neighbor Elisa Jackson. Other neighbors recalled the intensity of the fire and expressed shock at the sudden loss.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office, with support from the Will County Coroner’s Office and Crete Police.

The Crete-Monee School District 201-U confirmed that two students from Monee Elementary and one Crete-Monee High School student were among the deceased. The district announced it is increasing support for students, staff, and families affected by the tragedy.
