It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of Dr. Julie Duckart, a beloved member of the Eastern Kentucky University Department of Occupational Therapy in Berea, Kentucky. Her loss is felt profoundly by students, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Dr. Duckart was more than an educator—she was a guiding light, a mentor, and a source of unwavering kindness. Known by many as the “ray of sunshine” in the department, she had a rare gift for making everyone feel seen, valued, and supported. She never met a stranger; instead, she welcomed each person with warmth and genuine care, creating connections that left lasting impressions.
Her dedication to her students went far beyond the classroom. She understood their struggles, celebrated their victories, and offered encouragement when it was needed most. For many, especially those far from home, she became a comforting presence—someone who checked in, listened, and reminded them they were not alone. Her compassion defined her teaching and her life.
Dr. Duckart’s impact on the Occupational Therapy program at Eastern Kentucky University will never be forgotten. She shaped not only skilled professionals but also compassionate individuals who will carry forward her legacy of empathy and care. Her influence will continue to live on through every life she touched and every student she inspired.
A proud alumna of University of California, Berkeley and a graduate of Soquel High School, she carried her knowledge and passion into every chapter of her life, ultimately leaving an indelible mark on her community.
As we grieve this tremendous loss, we also celebrate the joy she brought into the world. Whether it was her bright spirit, her thoughtful gestures, or even her well-known love for Diet Coke, she leaves behind memories that will continue to bring comfort and smiles through the pain.
To the students and staff of the EKU OT department, may you find strength in one another and in the shared love you all hold for Dr. Duckart. In honoring her, may you continue to embody the kindness, generosity, and compassion she so effortlessly showed every day.
