Alex dedicated more than 26 years of service to the organization, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to helping those in need. His passing is a tremendous loss to his family, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched through his work and generosity.
Alex Murray was known as a man of humility, kindness, and purpose. Throughout his years of service, he remained deeply committed to the mission of feeding those facing hunger in the community. Whether serving as Board Chair, volunteering in the warehouse, or supporting outreach events such as Empty Bowls, Alex consistently showed up with a willingness to serve and a genuine desire to make a difference. His presence was not only impactful but also deeply appreciated by everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him.
His leadership extended far beyond titles and responsibilities. Alex believed in leading by example, often working behind the scenes and ensuring that every effort contributed to meaningful change. He was known for his approachable nature, his warm smile, and his ability to inspire others to get involved. His dedication helped strengthen the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan and ensured that its mission would continue to reach those most in need.
One of Alex’s most notable contributions was his involvement in transforming the NALC Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive into a powerful initiative that served the community on a large scale. Through his efforts, the drive brought in more than 9 million pounds of food, helping to provide nearly 8 million meals to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. His commitment to this cause demonstrated not only his leadership but also his deep compassion for others.
Together with his wife, Sylvia, Alex made a lasting impact through their generosity, contributing the equivalent of nearly 400,000 meals over the course of 27 years. Their dedication to giving back reflects the values Alex held throughout his life—selflessness, generosity, and a genuine concern for the well-being of others. His contributions were not just measured in numbers but in the lives he helped improve and the hope he brought to so many.
Beyond his work with the Food Bank, Alex was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His family was at the heart of everything he did, and he took great pride in the relationships he built and nurtured throughout his life. He believed strongly in the importance of community and was actively involved in his church, union, and various local initiatives, always striving to make a positive difference.
