Johannesburg — The legal community in South Africa is reeling following the tragic killing of Chinette Gallichan, a 35-year-old labour law attorney who was shot dead on Monday morning outside the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration offices in the Johannesburg CBD. The incident occurred shortly after 9:00 a.m. at the corner of Fox and Joubert streets, as Gallichan arrived for a scheduled matter.
According to reports, Gallichan, who worked in the labour litigation department at Sibanye-Stillwater, had been representing a mining company in a dispute involving workers seeking compensation following alleged retrenchments. Witnesses at the scene say a male suspect approached her as she exited her vehicle and opened fire at close range before fleeing on foot and escaping in a waiting vehicle. Authorities have indicated that none of her belongings were taken, leading to early suspicions that the attack may have been targeted.
Gallichan was a highly regarded legal professional, known for her expertise in labour law and her dedication to her work. She earned her LLB degree from the University of South Africa and later completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Labour Law with distinction from the University of Johannesburg. Colleagues describe her as diligent, intelligent, and deeply committed to justice.
Beyond her legal career, Gallichan was also an active member of the athletics community. Alongside her husband, Keegan, she participated in numerous running events and was a member of the Run Zone Athletics Club in Northcliff. Her participation in races such as the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon reflected her passion and discipline beyond the courtroom.
Her sudden and violent death has sent shockwaves through both the legal and sporting communities. Police have launched a full investigation into the murder, with efforts underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.
