Illinois Teacher Faces 55 Felony Charges in Alleged Grooming and Abuse Case Involving Student

A 30-year-old former special education teacher and soccer coach from an Illinois high school is facing a total of 55 felony charges after prosecutors say she groomed and SA’d a teenage boy over nearly two years.
Christina Formella, who worked at Downers Grove South High School in Downers Grove (a suburb outside Chicago), was first arrested back in March 2025 during a traffic stop. The case started when the 15-year-old student’s mother found explicit text messages on her son’s phone and reported it to police.
Investigators say the alleged abuse began in January 2023, when the boy was 14, and continued until around August 2024. Formella allegedly acted as his tutor and coach, using that position to build trust before the misconduct started. Prosecutors claim there were at least 45 instances of explicit meetups, some happening at the school during school hours, including one in a classroom before classes started in December 2023, and others at her home.
During her initial arrest, body camera footage captured Formella in tears in the police cruiser, asking officers questions and initially admitting the contact started about a year and a half earlier, but later denying sex occurred and calling the boy a “stalker.” Authorities say they found explicit texts on her phone, like one saying “I love you sooooo much baby… Even though this morning was short, it was perfect.” Formella claimed the student sent messages to himself from her phone as blackmail. Notes on her phone reportedly included angry entries about the boy “cheating” and her being “the best thing” he’d ever have, though she said those were just anxiety vents and some references were about her husband.
Formella has pleaded not guilty.
