Lawrence James Bohnenkamp, age 46, of Iowa City, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, while in custody at the Johnson County Jail. He was found unresponsive in his cell during a routine head count at approximately 4:05 a.m. Life‑saving efforts were performed and an ambulance was summoned, but Bohnenkamp later succumbed to his condition.
His death is currently under investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation in cooperation with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, and an autopsy is being conducted at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Pursuant to Iowa law, the State Jail Inspector has also been notified.
Mr. Bohnenkamp was born in 1979 and was a lifelong resident of eastern Iowa. He is remembered by family and friends as a devoted son, brother, and friend who enjoyed spending time with those close to him. Those who knew him recall his kind nature and willingness to help others.
He is survived by his immediate family, including his parents and siblings, and extended family members. Details regarding memorial services, visitation, or funeral arrangements have not yet been announced and will be shared with the community once they are finalized.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to a charity of the donor’s choosing in his memory.
