The Motueka community and the entire Motueka Cricket Club family are mourning the heartbreaking and unexpected loss of TK Hadzhikostov, a young player whose passion for cricket and joyful spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Though his life was far too short, TK filled it with enthusiasm, dedication, and a love for the game that inspired teammates, coaches, and supporters alike.
From the moment TK first attended a Friday night cricket session three years ago, it was clear that he had discovered something truly special. Cricket quickly became more than just a sport for him—it became his passion and his happy place. Week after week, he showed up with excitement and determination, eager to learn, practice, and grow as a player. His commitment was remarkable for someone so young, and it did not go unnoticed by those around him.
TK was known around the club as one of the coolest kids on the field, always proudly wearing his treasured number 12 club shirt. Whether at training, games, or simply spending time with his teammates, he carried himself with a sense of pride and enthusiasm that lifted the spirits of everyone around him. His love for the sport even followed him into everyday life—he once dressed up as a cricket player for a school dress-up day, a moment that perfectly reflected just how much the game meant to him.
One of the highlights of TK’s cricket journey came this season when he joined the club’s first-ever machine ball cricket team. Playing what he proudly called “proper cricket” alongside his teammates brought him immense joy. Those moments on the field, sharing the game he loved with his friends, were some of the happiest times of his young life.
He was especially thrilled earlier this year when players from the Central Stags and Central Hinds visited the club. TK proudly told others about the experience, particularly the moment he managed to catch one of the visiting players out. As a devoted fan of the Stags and the Blackcaps, he admired players like Ajaz Patel and often watched highlights of Patel’s famous ten-wicket haul. Inspired by his heroes, TK worked tirelessly to improve his own game as a natural spin bowler, even recording videos of himself bowling so he could study and refine his technique.
TK’s passion, dedication, and joyful personality made him a beloved member of the Motueka Cricket Club. His teammates, coaches, and the wider cricket community will miss his energy, curiosity, and love for the game immensely.
As the community grieves this profound loss, their thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with TK’s family during this incredibly difficult time. May the memories of his bright spirit, his passion for cricket, and the joy he brought to those around him continue to live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
