According to Redford Township police, the crash occurred around 8 p.m. at the intersection of 6 Mile Road and Kinloch Street. Investigators said Dylan was stopped on his ATV in the roadway when a vehicle traveling westbound on 6 Mile struck him. Authorities confirmed that he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. Sadly, Dylan was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating fully with investigators. Police have stated that alcohol and speed are not believed to have been factors in the crash. The roadway remained closed for several hours as officers conducted their investigation into the tragic incident.

Under Michigan law, ATVs are not permitted to be operated on public roads. Additionally, 15-year-olds are only allowed to cross a road or highway on an ATV while under the direct visual supervision of an adult, a requirement that authorities say was not met in this case. The Redford Police Traffic Bureau continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Dylan’s father, James Burkett, shared a deeply emotional reflection, recalling their frequent conversations about safety and wearing a helmet while riding. He explained that he always encouraged his son to wear protective gear out of love and concern for his safety. Their final conversation, though difficult at the time, reflected the care and guidance he tried to give his son.

Those who knew Dylan remember him as a spirited and adventurous teenager who loved the outdoors. Described by loved ones as a “rough-and-tumble kid from south Georgia,” Dylan enjoyed fishing, riding ATVs, and spending time with the people he cared about. He was also known for his devotion to his girlfriend and for helping care for his ailing grandfather, showing a compassionate and responsible side beyond his years.

As the community grieves this devastating loss, loved ones are coming together to honor Dylan’s memory and support his family. A GoFundMe has been organized to assist with funeral and memorial expenses during this incredibly difficult time.
