North Carolina Woman Mauled to Death by Neighborhood Dogs in Cherokee County
Murphy, NC – Authorities have confirmed that 74-year-old Diane Emily Pellington of Murphy, North Carolina, was tragically mauled to death by a group of dogs in her neighborhood.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office reported that the attack occurred on February 25 in the Hiwassee Dam community. Deputies were initially called for a welfare check at Pellington’s home after her family expressed concern for her safety. Responding officers discovered the scene, prompting an investigation.
“All the dogs involved in this tragic incident were known to live in the neighborhood and were on their owner’s property at the time of the attack,” the sheriff’s office stated. Investigators later seized three dogs, which were quarantined as the investigation proceeded.
An autopsy conducted at Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center confirmed that Pellington’s death resulted from the dog attack. The sheriff’s office worked alongside the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to ensure a thorough review of the incident.
Pellington, a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother, worked as a veterinary assistant and enjoyed research and spending time outdoors. Her family held a private graveside service in her memory.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office extended condolences to Pellington’s family, asking the public to respect their privacy during this difficult time.
