Authorities have identified the 17-year-old student killed in an auto-pedestrian crash involving a dump truck Tuesday afternoon as Jose Manuel Banda of Nederland.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Banda was struck around 4 p.m. on Highway 69 North at Spurlock Road. Chief Donta Miller confirmed the teen’s identity and said the circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation.
KFDM reports that Banda was a student at Nederland High School. In response to the tragedy, Nederland Independent School District officials said the high school principal is notifying parents by email and informing them that counseling services will be available for students and staff. The district is urging parents to closely monitor their children for any signs they may need help coping with the loss.
Justice of the Peace Brad Burnett has ordered an autopsy.
Highway 69 was closed for several hours following the crash and reopened shortly before 7 p.m. The Texas Department of Public Safety assisted the Sheriff’s Office at the scene.
The investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing.
