UPDATE: Pastor Fatally Shot During Burglary; Roommate’s Gunfire Strikes Both Suspect and Victim
On February 21, 2026 after midnight, officers responded to a burglary-in-progress call at a residence on South Kirkwood Road near Carriage Hill Drive in Houston, Texas. Upon arrival, officers reported hearing at least one gunshot from inside the home and detained an armed resident. Two men were found wounded inside the residence.
The victim was identified as 62-year-old Pedro Cantu.
According to the Houston Police Department, investigators determined that 44-year-old Rodney Dushaw Yoder allegedly broke into the home. Authorities say a 35-year-old resident, who lived at the house with Cantu, discharged a firearm while attempting to defend the residence. Police stated the gunfire struck both Yoder and Cantu.
Cantu was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Yoder was also transported for treatment and is expected to survive.
Yoder has been charged with burglary of a habitation. Authorities have not announced any charges against the resident who fired the weapon.
Family members said Cantu served as a longtime pastor at Amor & Restauracion Church for approximately 30 years. Hundreds gathered for a prayer service honoring his life and legacy.
Investigators have not stated whether the break-in was targeted or random. The case remains active and ongoing.
