Authorities have confirmed that two officers from the Harare Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Homicide Division were shot and killed during an operation targeting armed robbery suspects earlier today.
The fallen officers have been identified as Bernard Chindeke (38) and McKenzie Chitowe (42), both experienced investigators assigned to serious violent crime cases.
Police say the detectives had tracked two suspects linked to a series of armed robberies to Ndume Village, a rural area in Masvingo Province. During the attempted arrest, the suspects allegedly opened fire, leading to a deadly exchange of gunfire in which both officers were fatally wounded.
Backup units were deployed to the scene, but the suspects managed to flee. A large-scale manhunt is now underway, with roadblocks, patrol reinforcements, and investigative teams mobilized across the region.
Police officials described the slain detectives as dedicated public servants who lost their lives in the line of duty while pursuing dangerous criminals. Authorities are urging members of the public to report any information that could assist in locating the suspects, warning that they should be considered armed and extremely dangerous.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community and the nation, with tributes pouring in for the two officersβ bravery and sacrifice. Funeral arrangements and official honors are expected to be announced in the coming days.
