He Promised His Mistress a Divorce. The Next Day, His Wife Was Dead.
On February 28, 2026, a judge sentenced 52-year-old Kevin West to 25 years in prison for the killing of his wife, 48-year-old Marcy West, inside their home in Washougal, Washington.
Prosecutors said West fatally strangled his wife of two decades on their marital bed — just one day before he had promised his mistress’s family he would formally file for divorce.
On January 8, 2024, Marcy West was initially believed to have suffered a fatal seizure after Kevin West called 911 and summoned coworkers and friends from the fire department to the home. Despite a bruise on the back of her head, a medical examiner initially found inconclusive signs of foul play and released her body to a funeral home.
Investigators later rushed to retrieve the body after receiving a tip that West had recently been seen bowling with a woman who was not his wife. A second autopsy revealed bloody tissue in Marcy West’s throat, and authorities ruled the death a homicide.
Data from West’s iPhone health app contradicted his testimony that he went to bed early, showing someone carrying his device pacing throughout the night until moments before 911 was dialed.
A jury convicted the former fire battalion chief of first-degree murder in January after hearing evidence that he sought an alimony-free future and was burdened by mounting financial pressures despite earning approximately $160,000 per year.
The sentencing hearing revealed deep fractures within the family. The couple’s 20-year-old daughter, Megan West, confronted her father in court, accusing him of expecting the family to accept his mistress as a replacement for their mother.
“My father’s actions not only took my mom’s life, they took my future with her,” she said.
Their 22-year-old son, Ted West, defended his father and said he still believes he is innocent.
West addressed the court, apologizing for his affair but maintaining that was his only wrongdoing.
He will serve 25 years in prison.
