A former Dushore fire chief and his wife were tragically killed Tuesday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash in Sullivan County, according to Dushore Fire-Rescue.
Emergency crews were dispatched at 3:43 p.m. on Feb. 24 to a serious collision near the intersection of Route 220 and Harney Road in Albany Township. Responding units included Station 57, Station 8, Ambulance 1-57, Rescue 57, Station 58, and Chief 57.
Upon arrival, first responders found a passenger vehicle involved in a head-on crash with a tri-axle dump truck. Authorities said the two occupants of the car were pronounced dead at the scene.
Fire officials later identified the victims as former Station 57 Fire Chief Frank Yonkin and his wife, Bonnie Yonkin.
In a statement, Dushore Fire-Rescue described Frank Yonkin as a devoted leader, mentor, and military veteran who dedicated many years of service to the Dushore Fire Company and the surrounding community. Bonnie Yonkin was remembered as a steadfast supporter of the department and a valued member of its extended family.
Department officials called the deaths a profound loss for both the fire company and the wider community. They asked for prayers and support for the Yonkin family and for the emergency personnel impacted by the tragedy.
The crash remains under investigation, and further details have not yet been released.
