One person has died following an early Tuesday morning crash on Highway 421 in Sullivan County, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Authorities say the single-vehicle accident occurred around 3:00 a.m. when a Subaru Impreza traveling north on U.S. Highway 421 near Pyle Road ran off the right side of the roadway. The vehicle struck a fallen tree before coming to rest on a wooded embankment.
Officials identified the passenger as 18-year-old Justin Hall, who was pronounced dead as a result of the crash. The driver of the Subaru was also injured and transported for medical treatment. Investigators said neither the driver nor Hall was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
Charges are pending as the investigation remains ongoing.
The crash temporarily shut down a portion of Highway 421/State Route 34 near South Holston Lake. According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the roadway was closed in both directions while crews responded to the scene.
Highway 421 has since reopened to traffic.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
