Law enforcement agencies responded Tuesday, Feb. 24, to reports of gunfire near the campus of Florida International University.
Officers were dispatched to the area of 11200 SW 8th Street after receiving calls reporting possible shots fired. As a precaution, the campus was placed on a hard lockdown while police secured the scene and assessed the situation.
Authorities arrived quickly and established a perimeter around the reported location. Students, faculty, and staff were instructed to shelter in place as officers conducted a sweep of the area.
Details about the circumstances of the reported gunfire were not immediately available. Police have not confirmed whether anyone was injured or whether a suspect has been identified.
University officials said the lockdown was implemented out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of the campus community while law enforcement investigated.
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are expected to provide additional information as it becomes available.
