On February 16, 2026, authorities say a shooting unfolded at an ice rink in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, when a gunman opened fire during a youth hockey game, sending families and players scrambling for cover. Officials say the suspect specifically targeted family members before bystanders intervened. The suspect died at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The victims were identified as 52-yeat-old Rhonda Dorgan and her son, 23-year-old Aidan Dorgan, both of whom were pronounced deceased.
Authorities say three additional victims were critically injured, including Rhonda’s parents, Linda and Gerald Dorgan, as well as a family friend, Thomas Geruso.
Police identified the suspect as 56-year-old Robert Dorgan, who also went by the names Roberta Esposito and Roberta Dorgano. Investigators say the suspect had attended previous hockey games involving family members without prior incident.
Authorities say multiple bystanders rushed the suspect during the attack and were able to contain the situation in the stands while others fled. Despite being restrained, officials say the suspect was able to access a second firearm and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Investigators say the suspect and Rhonda Dorgan had been married for nearly 30 years before divorcing in 2020. Court documents show the initial filing referenced gender reassignment surgery and personality-related concerns before being amended to irreconcilable differences. Records also indicate the two shared the same last name prior to marriage.
Authorities say the suspect had been active on social media in the years leading up to the shooting, posting about transitioning, family dynamics, and marital issues. In one post, the suspect wrote that Rhonda Dorgan “hates the person who stole her husband,” while another read, “Transwoman, 6 kids: wife – not thrilled.”
Investigators also confirmed the suspect engaged in online discussions surrounding criticism of transgender individuals. In a post made one day prior to the shooting, the suspect stated that constant criticism was “why we go berserk.”
Authorities say the suspect was employed at a shipbuilding facility that contracts with the U.S. Navy, where coworkers reported occasional aggressive behavior, including verbal altercations. One colleague stated the suspect appeared conflicted about their identity, at times expressing pride and at other times embarrassment.
Officials confirmed the suspect previously served briefly in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1988 before being discharged within months. Authorities noted the discharge indicated the suspect did not meet expected standards.
Officials have not released a confirmed motive but stated the attack was targeted and stemmed from a domestic situation.
Community members later gathered for a vigil as the investigation remains ongoing.
