Authorities have released the name of the woman who was killed in a weekend shooting outside a gas station in the Norwood area of Birmingham. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified her as Shaneka Renee Hicks, a 20‑year‑old resident of Birmingham.
The shooting occurred around 8:04 p.m. Saturday in the 3100 block of 12th Avenue North at the Marathon station, also known locally as Norwood Everyday Store. Police say Hicks was struck by gunfire and later died from her injuries at UAB St. Vincent’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at approximately 8:51 p.m..
A male victim was also shot during the incident and was transported to the hospital by a private vehicle. As of the latest updates, he remains in critical condition.
Officials have not yet announced a motive or made any arrests in connection with the shooting. Birmingham police continue to investigate, and detectives are asking anyone with information to contact them or the Crime Stoppers hotline.
Police say this shooting is part of a troubling recent uptick in violent crime in the city, with Hicks’ death counted among the latest homicides in Birmingham so far this year.
