Justice for Angel: Three Men Sentenced in 2024 Columbus Shooting That Killed 13-Year-Old Angel Diaz

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Nearly a year after a senseless act of gun violence took the life of a child, three men have been sentenced for their roles in the April 2024 shooting death of 13-year-old Angel Diaz in north Columbus.

Jaivon Jones, Dock Parker, and Mekhi Webster appeared in court under heightened security as a judge handed down sentences connected to the deadly shooting. The courtroom was filled with Angel’s family, supporters, and community members seeking accountability for a loss that can never be undone.

Prosecutors said Angel was walking home from a nearby recreation center when gunfire erupted in the area. He was not the intended target, but was tragically struck, collapsing just steps away from safety. Despite emergency efforts, Angel died from his injuries.

During the emotional sentencing hearing, Angel’s mother addressed the defendants through an interpreter, describing the unbearable pain of losing her son and how her family’s life was permanently shattered. Her statement brought many in the courtroom to tears, underscoring the lifelong impact of a single violent moment.

Angel was remembered as a bright, loving child with dreams, a student who enjoyed spending time with friends and family, and a boy whose future was stolen far too soon.

Community leaders and prosecutors emphasized that while the sentences bring a measure of justice, they cannot restore a young life or fully heal a grieving family. The case has reignited calls in Columbus for stronger violence prevention, youth protection, and community intervention.

Angel Diaz’s name now stands as a painful reminder of the toll gun violence takes on innocent lives—and the families left to carry the grief forever.
