The Virginia Union University community, along with its National Alumni Association, is mourning the loss of Mike Newsome of Montpelier, Virginia, a respected alumnus and leader whose service and dedication made a lasting impact on the university and its graduates.
Newsome previously served on the National Alumni Association’s Finance Committee and was widely recognized for his leadership, mentorship, and commitment to advancing the mission of Virginia Union University. Colleagues describe him as approachable and thoughtful, known for his welcoming demeanor and genuine interest in the perspectives of others.
During his time with the alumni association, Newsome focused on strengthening connections with young alumni while preserving the traditions of the institution. His ability to balance innovation with long-standing values helped promote unity and progress within the alumni network.
He also played a significant role during a critical period for the association, offering guidance as alumni leaders navigated challenges during the pandemic. His efforts contributed to key initiatives, including the university’s first virtual Homecoming and the establishment of October 4 as VUU Alumni Day in Richmond.
University leaders and alumni continue to share tributes, remembering Newsome for his service, generosity, and lasting influence. Condolences have been extended to his family and loved ones.
