The shooting occurred just before 8 a.m. at a residence on River Lake Drive in the Southlake neighborhood, off Valleydale Road. According to Chief Morris, Hoover police officers were dispatched to the home at 7:49 a.m. following a call reporting a mentally disturbed individual at the location.

When officers arrived, Morris said the 38-year-old suspect, who lived at the home with his parents and his own children, brandished a handgun toward a family member standing nearby and began firing. During the exchange, both Glenn Adrian Griggs and a Hoover police officer were struck by gunfire. Officers returned fire, hitting the suspect.

Police radio traffic at approximately 8:15 a.m. indicated multiple people had been injured. The wounded Hoover officer was transported to UAB Hospital, where Chief Morris later confirmed the officer was in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. The suspect was also hospitalized and is reported to be in stable condition.

Tragically, Griggs was pronounced dead at the scene, having been shot in the driveway of the home.
