Double Murder in Punta Gorda Town: Two Men Fatally Shot in Apparent Drug-Related Incident
Two men were shot and killed at a residence on Queen Street, in Punta Gorda Town last night.
At approximately 8:05 p.m., police received reports of gunshots fired in the area. When police responded to the scene, they found 24 year old resident Luis Barillas, lying face down in a pool of blood in the yard. Barillas was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to the Punta Gorda Hospital. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head, including two shots to the left cheek and one to the left side of his temple.
At the Punta Gorda Hospital, police found another male victim, later identified as 27 year old Derick Arnold, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Arnold had been shot in the left upper chest, left thigh, and right upper back. Despite efforts by hospital staff, he was declared Arnold dead upon arrival.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the two victims, along with several others, were socializing at Barillas’ home when the fatal shooting occurred. According to reports, around 8:00 p.m., a slim-built, dark-complexioned male, dressed in a grey hoodie sweater, arrived at the residence and appeared to be attempting to purchase drugs. When Derick Arnold opened the zinc gate to the yard, the gunman opened fire, hitting both Arnold and Barillas. The suspect then fled the scene. A number of other individuals present at the house managed to escape unharmed.
Scene of Crime personnel collected nine expended shell casings at the scene.
So far, police have not made any arrests.
