Mayor Gary Carey described the loss as “profound,” saying Shoultz was a leader who consistently put people first and worked to build trust between the fire department and the community it serves.

“He led with purpose and he prioritized people,” Carey said. “He worked every day to strengthen the trust between our fire department and the community it serves.”

Officials confirmed that Walker police and fire personnel responded to the medical emergency. No further details were released, out of respect for Shoultz’s family and the first responders involved.

Shoultz had served as Walker Fire Chief since July 1 of last year and brought more than three decades of experience in fire service, emergency response, law enforcement, and public safety leadership. Before joining Walker, he served as chief of special operations for the St. George Fire Protection District in Louisiana.

City leaders said his impact was immediate, noting his strong focus on training, preparedness, and modernizing operations within the department. He was also widely respected for his commitment to community outreach and public safety education.

Mayor Carey said condolences have been pouring in from fire departments and agencies across the country, reflecting the reach of Shoultz’s career and reputation.

“He was very loved, very well-respected,” Carey said. “In a relatively short time, his impact was both immediate and lasting.”

Walker officials said support is being provided to firefighters and police officers as they process the loss, with neighboring agencies stepping in to assist with coverage and allow time for grieving.

A memorial is planned at Fire Station 1, with details for a public service to be announced later.

City leaders described Shoultz as a dedicated public servant whose leadership, professionalism, and commitment to others left a lasting mark on the department and the community he served.

The City of Walker asked for privacy for his family and colleagues during this difficult time as they mourn the loss of a respected chief, mentor, and friend
