The Ascension Episcopal School community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of senior Martha Odom, who was killed during a shootout at the Mall of Louisiana on Thursday.
In a statement released by the school, officials confirmed that two other students were injured in the incident and are continuing to recover. The school also noted that two additional students were present during the violence but were not physically harmed.
Faculty and classmates described Odom as a bright and joyful presence on campus, remembered for her kindness, infectious enthusiasm, and the light she brought to those around her. Her death has left a deep impact on the Ascension Episcopal School family as they try to process the tragedy.
“Our hearts are heavy as we walk through this moment together,” said Head of School Sarah Davenport. “We are holding one another close in faith and love.”
Davenport added that the school’s focus remains on supporting the emotional well-being of its students, families, and staff during this difficult time.
“I am always proud of how our Ascension Family takes care of its own,” she said.
The school emphasized its foundation of faith as it faces the painful loss, referencing Psalm 34:18, which reads: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Ascension Episcopal School expressed appreciation for the outpouring of support from the community and confirmed that counseling and pastoral services remain available on campus for those who need comfort and guidance.
