A deep sense of grief is being felt across Massillon following the sudden and tragic death of Shawn D. Simon, 41, who was killed Thursday afternoon in a devastating crash in Stark County.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the fatal two-vehicle collision occurred at approximately 12:16 p.m. on April 23 along State Route 93 in Lawrence Township. What began as an ordinary afternoon quickly turned into a heartbreaking scene that has left loved ones searching for answers and struggling to cope with a life lost too soon.
Troopers reported that Simon was driving a 2005 GMC Sierra northbound when the vehicle went left of center and collided head-on with a southbound 2018 Chevrolet Silverado. The impact was severe, sending both vehicles off the roadway and leaving extensive damage.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, but officials said Simon suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Due to the seriousness of the crash, authorities confirmed that Simon had to be mechanically extricated from his vehicle.
The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado was identified as Terry L. Evans, 70, also of Massillon. Evans was transported to Aultman Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. A front-seat passenger riding with Evans was not injured.
Several agencies responded to assist with the emergency and investigation, including Lawrence Township Fire and EMS, North Lawrence EMS, the Canal Fulton Fire Department, the Lawrence Township Police Department, and Patriots and Luthis towing.
As investigators work to determine the circumstances that led to the deadly crash, the Massillon community is left mourning the loss of Simon and reflecting on the fragility of life.
