With profound sadness and heavy hearts, we come together to remember and honor the life of Jeffery Scott, whose life was tragically taken on February 4, 2026, in Troup County. What should have been an ordinary evening ended in heartbreak, leaving a family grieving, a community shaken, and loved ones searching for answers.
According to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at approximately 7:49 p.m. to a residence located at 209 Big Springs Mountville Road following reports that two adult males had been shot. Upon arrival, deputies found both victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Life-saving measures were immediately initiated by deputies until the Fire Department and EMS personnel arrived and took over medical care.
Tragically, Jeffery Scott, 54, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His life was taken far too soon, leaving behind sorrow that words cannot fully express. Jeffery was more than a victim of violence—he was a human being with a story, relationships, memories, and people who loved him deeply. His absence leaves a painful void that will be felt for years to come.
The second victim, Walter Keene, 50, was transported to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center, where he received treatment for his injuries. As he continues his recovery, our thoughts are with him as he faces not only physical healing but also the emotional weight of surviving such a traumatic event.
Investigators later determined that the suspect, Zachary Thompkins, 32, came to the location to confront one of the victims over a previous disagreement. During that confrontation, a firearm was produced, and both men were shot before the suspect fled the scene. Thompkins was later located at a residence on Greenville Road and taken into custody without incident. He now faces charges including murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
