A 17-year-old has been charged with murder following the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man outside the Northside Recreation Center in San Angelo, authorities said.
According to the San Angelo Police Department, officers responded to reports of shots fired at approximately 5:24 p.m. Thursday. When they arrived at the recreation center grounds, they found 19-year-old Isaiah Bailon suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
During the investigation, detectives identified 17-year-old Matthew Rodriguez as the suspect. Authorities said investigators determined that Bailon and Rodriguez had been involved in an illegal firearm transaction shortly before the shooting occurred.
Rodriguez was arrested and formally charged with murder. He is currently being held in the Tom Green County Jail on a $1,000,000 bond.
The San Angelo Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division led the case with assistance from multiple specialized units, including the Gang Unit, Drone Unit, Narcotics Division, Special Operations Unit, K9 Unit, and Crime Scene Investigations.
Officials said the investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to review evidence and circumstances surrounding the incident.
