With profound sorrow, family, friends, and the Harlan community mourn the tragic and sudden loss of Jacob Buman, 19, who passed away Wednesday evening following a devastating motorcycle crash in Shelby County. His passing has left an overwhelming sense of grief and disbelief among those who knew and loved him.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 7:25 p.m. on Shelby County Road M-16, just north of Shelby. Investigators reported that Jacob was operating a 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle northbound when he struck the rear of a 2010 Apache 715 field sprayer, which was also traveling northbound and beginning a left turn into a driveway at 226 County Road M-16.
Authorities stated the collision happened while the sprayer was in mid-turn. The impact caused the motorcycle to leave the roadway, coming to rest in the west ditch. The field sprayer came to a stop in the driveway. Despite immediate emergency response, Jacob Buman was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.
The operator of the sprayer, Luke Applegate, 37, of Shelby, was not injured in the crash.
In Harlan, the news of Jacob’s passing has been met with deep heartbreak. At only 19 years old, he was at the beginning of his journey—filled with hopes, goals, and dreams that will now remain unfulfilled. His loss has left a painful void in the lives of his family and friends, who are now holding onto memories that feel even more precious in the wake of tragedy.
Those who knew Jacob remember a young life marked by potential and presence—someone whose absence is already deeply felt in his community. What should have been a future full of milestones has instead become a moment of mourning and remembrance.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
As loved ones grieve, Jacob Buman will be remembered not for the way his life ended, but for the life he lived and the people he impacted along the way. His memory will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved him.
May Jacob Buman rest in peace, and may his family and friends find comfort, strength, and healing in the days ahead.
