Authorities in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, are investigating a serious crash that occurred following a high-speed vehicle pursuit, leaving the driver, identified as Latrell Ballard of Portsmouth, Virginia, critically injured and airlifted to a regional medical facility. The incident unfolded on the afternoon of April 27, 2026, and involved a dramatic sequence of events that ended with the vehicle overturning multiple times after leaving the roadway.
According to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, the situation began when a deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a black Chevrolet sedan traveling westbound on Highway 58 between Baskerville Road and Wooden Bridge Road. The vehicle was allegedly observed traveling at excessive speed. However, instead of stopping, the driver reportedly fled, prompting a pursuit by law enforcement.
Officials stated that during the chase, the suspect vehicle continued westbound at high speed, with deputies observing dangerous driving behavior, including erratic lane changes and weaving through traffic. Law enforcement attempted to maintain pursuit while ensuring public safety as the situation escalated.
The pursuit ultimately came to a violent end near the intersection of Ghee Williams Drive. Investigators report that the driver lost control of the vehicle, which then left the roadway, struck an embankment, and became airborne. The car reportedly overturned multiple times before coming to rest off the roadway, sustaining significant damage.
When deputies and emergency responders reached the scene, they found Latrell Ballard trapped inside the heavily damaged vehicle. First responders immediately worked to stabilize the situation. Officials also reported that deputies used a fire extinguisher to suppress flames coming from the engine compartment, helping prevent further escalation of the crash scene before firefighters and EMS crews arrived.
Emergency medical personnel provided critical, life-saving treatment at the scene. Due to the severity of the injuries sustained, Ballard was subsequently airlifted by helicopter to a regional trauma center for advanced medical care. His current condition has not yet been publicly disclosed.
Virginia State Police have taken over the investigation into the crash, as is standard procedure in pursuit-related incidents. Investigators are examining multiple factors, including the initial reason for the attempted traffic stop, the circumstances of the pursuit, roadway conditions, and the sequence of events leading to the crash. Officials have not yet confirmed whether any additional charges are expected pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office has emphasized that the pursuit ended quickly but involved significant risk due to the high speeds and driving behavior observed. Authorities are expected to release further details as the investigation progresses.
